I know the idea of milk sounds gross to most adults (although I’m 26 and I still drink milk every day!) but coconut milk is something you might want to consider for its health benefits.

Until recently, coconut milk (not to be confused with coconut water, which is found when you break open a coconut; the milk comes from the white “meat” of the coconut) was considered too high in saturated fat and thus bad for you. Further research has proven that coconut milk not only packs a ton of vitamins and minerals, but it can actually help you lose weight if that’s what you’re aiming for.

Coconut milk has a high fiber content, so it’ll make you feel full faster. On top of that, the type of fat in coconut milk is actually used as energy when it enters your body. It also contains a high amount of vitamin C and lauric acid, which boosts your immune system. Get this: The only other source of such high lauric acid is in human breast milk!

Okay, I know you’re dying to know the beauty benefits of coconut milk! Good news: Coconut milk contains copper (the mineral, not the metal!) which improves skin’s elasticity… In other words: Adios, wrinkles!

Stressed?? A healthy amount of magnesium in coconut milk will relax your nerves. In addition to magnesium, one serving can pack up to 50% of our recommended dietary allowance of B12!! So you can ditch the Xanax and pour yourself a cold glass of this tropical drink instead.

Potassium, selenium, zinc… The list goes on. The point is coconut milk is an extremely healthy and underrated drink that’s actually tasty and refreshing! You can even throw it in the blender with some strawberries, pineapples, and ice (okay, toss some rum in there, too) for an even more delicious elixir.

Visit Whole Foods for a variety of coconut milk options, including individually packaged cartons for when you’re on the go, or just your typical half gallon carton from So Delicious (they also make coconut milk ice cream!! Yum!).
