I’m always getting questions about my favorite brushes and how my makeup looks flawless. Well, part of the reason my makeup looks the way it does is because of the brush I use: To apply my foundation, I always use a flat kabuki brush. Here’s a little breakdown of the kabuki brush and why I find it so amazing!
When you look at a kabuki brush, you can instantly tell it’s different from other brushes in that the hairs are much more tightly packed together and there’s a lot more of it than most other brushes. A kabuki brush is very dense, allowing you to “buff” your makeup into your skin. Using my kabuki brush to make small circular motions, I buff my foundation onto my skin allowing it to create a smooth and seemingly flawless appearance. The density of the kabuki brush is what allows you to use this buffing technique in order to get such a nice finish!
I would recommend using a kabuki brush for more of the medium to full coverage stuff like liquid and cream foundations. I’d skip it for something like a tinted moisturizer.
I’ve had plenty of other kabuki brushes that I’ve loved, but the one I’m currently obsessed with and use almost every day is theĀ Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki brush. First of all, I love the sleek black handle, and secondly, it’s synthetic! Synthetic fibers are always great for liquid and cream makeup… I absolutely love this brush! And the size is perfect; sometimes kabuki brushes tend to be too large to use in the more hard-to-reach areas like your nose and under eyes, but the Sigma F80 is just the right size to get my whole face!
You can pick up the Sigma F8 Flat Kabuki brush here, and use code BASE2013 to get 10% off your purchase until February 28th!
Or if you’re as obsessed with kabuki brushes as I am, check out the New Synthetic Kabuki Kit with 5 different kabuki brushes. You can use the 10% discount code as well and, for any purchase over $30, Sigma will send you a free gift!

Love your blog! Question- in previous posts you have raved about bdellium brushes. Do you love sigma brushes more than bdellium brushes and can you explain what you like better about one or the other.
Thank you!

I really love both brands… It’s been difficult to find high quality brushes that are also affordable, and both Bdellium Tools and Sigma are exactly that. There are some Sigma brushes that I now use more than the Bdellium Tools… For example, this Kabuki brush. I have the Bdellium Tools Kabuki as well, but I like the Sigma version better… It’s a tad smaller and more dense. I just have more control with it. However, something like the Bdellium Tools 776 blending brush I cannot live without, it’s the best! So I like both brands equally (although I have to say I LOVE the sleek black Sigma handles. So chic!) and would recommend either in a heartbeat. The prices are comparable as well. But if you’re thinking about making a big purchase, let’s say a set of brushes, you can get 10% off from the Sigma website and you’ll get a free gift with a purchase over $30.

Hi Teni!
I’m completely obsessed with the F80 too – it’s my all time favourite foundation brush. I’ve been considering buying the synthetic kabuki set but I can’t decide if it’s worth it.. it seems like a lot of brushes that do the same thing! What are your thoughts?
Thanks and lots of love from Australia!
Chloe xx

If you already have the F80, you can probably skip the set. But if you need something like a good concealer brush (the tapered/pointed one is great for that) or if you use any sort of mineral makeup the rounded kabuki could be great. I like that the have the angled brush, which I think is awesome for contouring, but I personally haven’t used the kabuki style. I’ve been using the F40 Large Angled Contour brush: http://www.sigmabeauty.com/product_p/f40.htm?Click=398586 This is actually my number 2 favorite sigma brush! So, in conclusion, you probably don’t NEED this set unless you have specific ideas in mind for it. I think Sigma has other wonderful brushes you can choose from!

is the f80 better than bdellium 957?
Teni Panosian says:

they’re both great, but the f80 is just slightly smaller so I have more control with my application, so I’ve been using that a lot more lately. But as far as quality goes, they’re equally good.

Now I’m wondering which is better, this Kabuki brush or the beauty blender for a flawless application? HELP!?!?

The Beauty Blender is also another great pick… Personally, just because of the maintenance, I don’t use it very much. Having to clean it each time, even with the proper cleanser, strips it of its original form and it starts to look more like a porous sponge. But both the Kabuki and the Beauty Blender are great options for flawless application!
