If you’ve been following my blog for some time, you know I’ve been fighting the battle against dry skin… And lately I’ve been winning! I’ve found great products that have pumped hydration and moisture into my desperately dry skin. But where I’ve been losing the dry battle is with my hair: I just haven’t been able to help my coarse, frizzy, curly/wavy hair. And especially for someone like me who has very dark (almost black)ย hair, it takes a lot of processing to lighten it. So in addition to being coarse and dry to begin with, add a bunch of color treating and you’ve got coarse, dry, and damaged.

Just as I was beginning to accept that I’d simply have to deal with the state of my hair, I was introduced to theย Joico product line. Without getting too technical, (although I love learning about the chemistry of hair!) all Joico products now carry a patent pending complex that actually transforms your hair. This specific complex is able to find what’s lacking about the hair shaft and fill in the missing parts that are causing the damage and weakness, making for a healthier and stronger strand of hair. Obviously, I wasn’t going to believe it til I tried it for myself… And that’s exactly what I did!

The first thing I tried was the K-PAK Shampoo and Conditioner. This combo contains two super reconstructive technologies that are meant to repair and strengthen hair. But here’s where I think it’s so amazing: It only repairs your hair where it needs it. If there are parts where your hair is healthy and doing just fine, it washes right off. But in the areas where you have damage, it steps right in and gets working! After the first shampoo, my hair looked and felt really good; so I kept using it. After about four uses, I was starting to see completely transformed hair: My dry, brittle hair (which I often refer to as hay, sadly) was soft, silky, and it was actually shiny. I haven’t seen shine on my hair since I was a kid! Truly amazing.

I went on to try the Color Endure Shampoo and Conditioner as well since my hair is color treated. I got the same incredible results, and even better, in fact. That’s the thing with the Joico system: The more you use it, the more it repairs your hair.

And here’s a little bonus: The Joico styling collection also carries the same reparative technology as the shampoos and conditioners, so you’re actually improving your hair each time you style. My favorites so far are the Power Spray (holds like a dream, but I can still style my hair with heat tools even after I’ve sprayed. No sizzle!) and the Texture Boost, a spray wax.

The proof is in my perfectly-maintained mane: I never thought I’d reach up and feel soft, healthy hair on my head! And who knows… Maybe with continued use this stuff’ll make my hair even better. I’m definitely sticking to Joico to find out.

Hi Teni, glad to hear of your new discovery as it can get so overwhelming with so many products out there. I’d love to check this brand out but do Joico products contain sulphates and parabens though? I get eczma/psiorisis which flares up anytime I use soaps, hair or body products with sulphate in them. Thank you for the review!

    • Ah, good question! I know the Color Endure shampoo and conditioner do not contain sulfates, and as for parabens, I don’t see any in the ingredients either. However, I would double check just in case because I know sometimes certain ingredients are labeled differently (it may show up as a different name but in fact be a paraben). But in my experience, parabens are clearly labeled so I believe it should be fine. Again, i would double check, just because I know eczema and psoriasis can be a pain to deal with :\ I have very dry skin and that’s bad enough!!

Hi Teni, I recently purchased a smooth cure conditioner for fizzy hair as my Daughter has gorgeous curly hair. I found this a pleasure to use and really helps my Daughter’s unruly locks! It actually says on the front of the bottle sulfate free. I couldn’t see parabens on the list of ingredients. Wouldn’t hurt to email Joico direct.

Hi Teni, I love all your dry skin tips because I have dry skin too! I noticed that you said you have found products that help for your dry skin. I also have very dry and sensitive skin and I have tried a lot of different products but I can’t seem to find any that keep my skin hydrated and treat the dryness. Are there any that you would recommend? Thanks!

    • I feel your pain!! I was given an opportunity to try a line called Prestiche a while back, and to this day I still use their creams. Check out their stuff here: They’re made of all natural ingredients so the stuff really sinks into your skin rather than sitting on top of it like other products with mineral oil and other useless ingredients do. I’m very impressed with how my skin has responded to Prestiche!! And the Orange Mango Papaya creme de la creme smells DELICIOUS! It’s a subtle scent but so yummy. And all the scents come from natural extracts and oils ๐Ÿ™‚ good luck!

    Hi Teni!

If you’re looking for something new for dry damaged hair my husband and I have created a Natural Indian Hair Oil product called Darshana. It was inspired by our travels to India. It helps smooth, moisturize, and condition hair of all types but is particularly helpful with dry, damaged, or curly hair. Its blend of natural oils contains antioxidants, omega 3-6-9, and vitamins which makes your hair healthier, smoother, and more manageable.

You can check it out at and on our facebook page

You can contact us through the site if you have any questions. We just launched it a few weeks ago and it’s a hit. People LOVE Darshana!
